You Never Forget Your First Time: Review of Deadgirl

Deadgirl (2008)
Directed by: Marcel Sarmiento, Gadi Harel
Starring: Shiloh Fernandez, Noah Segan

Let me begin by saying that the trailer (embedded below), does not do this movie justice. This is a very twisted movie with a plot and story that are not for the faint of heart. But let’s start from the beginning.

It starts off like your typical high school setting: there is a 17-year old that is kind of a rebel. Dresses a little dark, kind of stays by himself and is always looking at the popular girl that he can’t have because she is dating the jock. This is Rickie (Shiloh Fernandez) who has a best friend name J.T. (Noah Segan). They decide to go to an abandoned hospital so they can drink beers and trash the place. J.T. decides to scare Rickie and takes him down into the tunnels beneath the hospital. They end up stumbling upon a room which they force open and find a dead girl. The only thing is, she isn’t actually dead.

Here is where the movie takes a very twisted turn. It turns out that J.T. finds this woman to be pretty attractive and decides to have his way with her to the disappointment of Rickie. As the movie continues, it dives deeper into the hole that J.T. has begun to dig himself. His insatiable thirst for sex seems to drive him mad. The movie finally ends with another expected twist so be prepared to stay on the edge of your seat.

Overall, I would recommend this movie if you are looking for something a little creepy and disturbing to watch. This is an independent film but is has won several awards and is worth the watch, in my opinion. So grab some popcorn, put in the movie, and be prepared to be disgusted and disturbed.

On a scale of 0-10
Acting: 7
Plot: 7
Production: 6
Overall: 7

Pros: It is a disturbing horror movie that pushes the moral limits, great pick for when you want a disturbing, bloody flick.

Cons: The acting isn’t all that great, may be too disturbing for the faint of heart.

Review of Snuff

Snuff
Written by: Chuck Palahniuk

If you are familiar with the writings of Palahniuk, you will know all too well the twisted characters, ridiculous plots, and graphic writing that fill the pages of his books. Snuff, is no exception to his normal writing style.

The story is told in the first person view from four different characters. These characters are known as Mr. 72, Mr. 137, Mr. 600, and Sheila. So what is the deal with the numbers you might ask? Those numbers are to correspond with their place in line....for a 600 person gang bang. That’s right, the story is about a porn actress who is going to break the world record for having sex with the most men in a video. Typical Palahniuk.

However, also typical of Palahniuk, the story is very well written and it definitely kept me interested and on the edge of my seat for the whole book. This book is just kind of something you have to throw yourself into. Palahniuk does a great job by showing happy characters at the beginning, just excited to have sex with their favorite porn actress, but as the story progresses, their own personal problems come to the surface and you can see the steady decline of each of the characters into the more depressing side of their life that Palahniuk is so good at doing.

The story contains the typical plot twists that any Palahniuk fan can appreciate. And what he does really well in this book is bring four characters that seemingly have nothing in common at the beginning, and as the story progresses, you see how each of them has an influential part in each other’s life.

Overall, I would recommend this book if you are looking for something a little darker to read. I found this to be a book where I was able to just let go and immerse myself in the story. Palahniuk fans, this is a book that shouldn’t be missed. As for those who are new to his writing style, expect a book where anything can happen and let him draw those pictures in your mind.

On a scale of 0-10:
Character Development: 8
Plot: 6
Writing Style: 9
Overall: 7

Pros: Good character development, short enough for a good weekend read, plot twists, typical Palahniuk.

Cons: Story is farfetched for those not used to his writing style, may be too dark for some readers.

The purpose for this blog

Aside from being with my girlfriend, one thing that I love to do in my free time is play video games, read books and watch movies. So the new purpose is for me (and if it goes well, my girlfriend too) to review the books we read, the movies we watch and the games that we play. I want to use a 0-10 scale and try to incorporate important ideas into the reviews which I think make it worth it or not to read/watch/play. And feel free to leave any thoughts, supporting or refuting, on my reviews.
